ESPN's QBR Disqualifies Tom Brady From 2013 MVP

Posted on December 14, 2013 at 10:00 PM

ESPN's total QBR has been tracking the individual performance of quarterbacks since the 2006 NFL season. Within that time-frame, five quarterbacks have been named the league's most valuable player and in all five instances, that quarterback has also ranked first in total QBR. In limited action, Josh McCown currently ranks 1st in 2013.

  • Tom Brady in 2007: Named MVP -- ranked 1st in total QBR.
  • Peyton Manning in 2008: Named MVP -- ranked 1st in total QBR.
  • Peyton Manning in 2009: Named MVP -- ranked 1st in total QBR.
  • Tom Brady in 2010: Named MVP -- ranked 1st in total QBR.
  • Aaron Rodgers in 2011: Named MVP -- ranked 1st in total QBR.

The same correlation is present between ranking first in total QBR and being named First Team All-Pro.

  • Peyton Manning in 2006: Named First Team All-Pro -- ranked 1st in total QBR.
  • Tom Brady in 2007: Named First Team All-Pro -- ranked 1st in total QBR.
  • Peyton Manning in 2008: Named First Team All-Pro -- ranked 1st in total QBR.
  • Peyton Manning in 2009: Named First Team All-Pro -- ranked 1st in total QBR.
  • Tom Brady in 2010: Named First Team All-Pro -- ranked 1st in total QBR.
  • Aaron Rodgers in 2011: Named First Team All-Pro -- ranked 1st in total QBR.
  • Peyton Manning in 2012: Named First Team All-Pro -- ranked 1st in total QBR.

Which brings us to the comparison between Manning and Brady in 2013 -- one which isn't even close.

  • Peyton Manning: 2nd in total QBR -- Tom Brady: 11th in total QBR.
  • Peyton Manning: 1st in total QBS -- Tom Brady: 11th in total QBS.
  • Peyton Manning: 1st in passing yards -- Tom Brady: 6th in passing yards.
  • Peyton Manning: 1st in touchdown passes -- Tom Brady: 9th in touchdown passes.
  • Peyton Manning: 3rd in completion percentage -- Tom Brady: 19th in completion percentage.
  • Peyton Manning: 2nd in adjusted AN-YPA -- Tom Brady: 14th in AN-YPA.

While Manning is having arguably the greatest season a quarterback has ever had in NFL history, Brady is having arguably the worst season of his entire career.
